More Recent Times

By the Norse period it was possible to enter the tomb and runic graffiti was carved on one of the interior slabs. This was discovered during consolidation work in the early twentieth century when it was moved to form the lintel to the side chamber. There is also some more recent graffiti on this slab and on other slabs in the chamber.
The consolidation work included the capping of the chamber by a concrete dome so that it is possible to get an impression of the interior space – albeit with modern light and ventilation.
