The arrangements of stones at many stone circles do show alignments with astronomical occurrences in the form of star, moon and sun orbits. The Neolithic community relied on accurate observation of the passing year in order to plant their crops and ensure a successful harvest. They were also dependent on the clemency of the seasons. The design of the circles may well have served to relate the community to the wider world and changing conditions in which they were living. They may have helped to mitigate against the uncertainties of nature and reassure people of their long term survival.
