Inside the Ring

We don’t actually know what people did at the middle of the Ring of Brodgar.  There has been no excavation here to reveal remaining traces of past activity.  Excavation at the Stones of Stenness, however, uncovered the remains of various settings including a large hearth and this sort of evidence has been found elsewhere on similar sites around the UK. At some sites, such as Stonehenge in England, burials have been found leading to the speculation that the stone circles could have been used for burial.. Other suggestions have included the use of the circles for healing purposes.
In practice, it is most likely that these monuments served many purposes, perhaps involving different members of the community at different times. For more information have a look at the Orkneyjar website:
