The Night-time Sky

Daily and seasonal routines are essential for any farming community, particularly those of the past. The annual round could be recognised from observation of the stars and accumulated knowledge of weather patterns. It is important to remember that those who built and used the monuments at the heart of Neolithic Orkney did not just come here by day. The sites are particularly evocative by moonlight and on great winter nights when the aurora borealis stretches out above the stones.
